about the studio

Welcome to a fun way to increase brain power and reduce stress!!

I teach almost ALL ages ~~~ ages 6 to 84. I have taught people successfully from every decade of life, except people in their 90's and under 5.

ALL YEAR round you are basically paying for A HALF an hour PRIVATE PIANO or PRIVATE VIOLIN lessons with the student, me and the instrument. However, During The School Year ONLY, I like the student to come for an hour. The Hour is split equally between their PRIVATE lesson and computer time, (violin instructional DVD or music history, or other pertinent related technology things) and about 5 minutes on a theory workbook. The student will have a "study-buddy". WHILE ONE IS ON THE COMPUTER, THE OTHER IS AT THE PIANO OR VIOLIN PRIVATELY. Then they switch places maximizing contact with the music language. Both times are tailored to fit the individual students' needs. I try to schedule together those who would inspire eachother, either of a similar age or level, if it is possible to fit in your schedule.

It is good for the student to hear another student's lessons, while they work on the computer. This gives the student more time to digest the music language. They also learn that all pianists and violinists have similar problems. This helps them not to be frustrated, but to just keep working.

The 1/2 hour extra is FREE. I just love to see you learn fast and thoroughly. Each 1/2 hour private lesson is based on the rate of about $22. (If you would like to purchase additional individual private lesson time you may. It is $44 per hour, or $33 for 45 minute private lessons. These are paid in monthly-semester payments.) If there are 4 months in the semester, it is paid off in 3 months, each month at $110. If there are 5 months in the semester it is paid off in 4 months, each month at $110. In the Fall semester there is a one time $17 Technology fee for using the computer, other technology, etc., and another one time $17 Technology fee in the Spring semester. Less book-keeping means more time for you to learn.
(In the summer 2009 it is $21 times how many 1/2 hour lessons in the month payable on the first lesson in the month. More time may be purchased at the above rates. No computer fee or use.)

I have a BUNCH (around $1,000 worth) of animated fun computer programs that I use to reinforce what I have taught at the piano or violin. I track each person so I can give them a well rounded background in music theory.

Several opportunities for performance are given throughout the year. This school year we are scheduled to have 3 regular performances (some at nursing homes, retirement centers, and one at a rented building where they can snack.), and the 4th performance is the NFMC festival. These are great to build confidence in front of a crowd, self-esteem, and ability in performance.

One option available to students, even adults, is to enter the National Federation of Music Clubs Piano and Violin Festival. With each set of 15 points (given by a qualified judge) students can earn a beautiful gold cup. Each time they earn a cup, it is LARGER!! Until it is VERY Large!! :) The most points they can earn a year is 5, but if they earn a 4, which is still an excellent, it will be easier to earn the following cups. The remaining points can be used to cover another year that was a 4. So after one year of getting a 4, the next set of 3 or 4 years it takes to get a cup, they will get theirs always in 3! If the student gets 3 superiors in a row, they can perform at a state convention, and earn another medal.

Anyway, everyone is competing against himself or herself by a qualified kind judge, who rates and writes helpful comments for the student according to his or her accuracy in the music. This is a National Event occurring in many locations in the last of February or early March. Most of my students get 5s, a few get 4s. But 4s are still Excellent. I make sure they are ready. This gives them experience in playing for scholarships, juries and other music "interviews". They think it is fun because all receive a certificate every year, and the pieces are longer and more exciting on the NFMC list to learn. They are really proud of their accomplishment. Through this they work harder and accomplish more. They also learn to become a better performer.

Other Studio Information: All year round you are basically paying for 1/2 hour lessons with me privately at the piano or violin. You ALWAYS have lessons with me alone at the piano or violin. However, during the school year ONLY (the summer has a different policy), two students share an hour lesson one day a week. The hour lesson time is split between Each student who takes their turn on the piano PRIVATELY or violin PRIVATELY and then PRIVATELY on the computer, listening lab, digital piano, theory hands-on games, or theory workbook. This gives them more time to absorb the musical language. You get the extra time to learn for FREE.

You are welcome to come in and observe your child's lessons if you wish. Your interest helps them learn, especially if they are very young. The older students do not need this extra help so much, like the little ones. Either way is fine with me. However, if others or children come in they must be quiet and fairly still (and stay in the teaching areas) in order not to disturb the lessons. They must stay in the lesson areas. Please do not bring food or drinks to the lessons.

Our fall school semester begins September 2010. The Spring semester begins in January 2011. To guarantee a reservation for the fall, be sure to be enrolled the last week in August. All year round the amount of time at the piano or violin privately is ½ hour long (unless you purchase additional time). In the summer there are make-up lessons due to lifestyle changes of no school and vacations, but in the school year there are no make-up lessons because all the after school hours are full. And the make-up lessons are built into the hour lesson.

To compensate for no make-up lessons in the school year, you get a ½ an hour extra time every lesson with a tailored-to-fit-you computer school with many expensive, animated and fun music programs.

However, there are no make-ups during the school year if the students miss a lesson for 3 reasons: Make-up time is built in the schedule. For some lessons, each student will get twice the piano lesson time when the other person misses (If a make-up time is needed, or sometimes I will do an extra one in advance of needing a make-up.). It usually equals out within the school year. Every lesson they double their learning time with the computer. (And there is no time left in the school day---all the time slots are filled). I have "swap sheets" that you can use to call someone in advance and swap lesson times with that person, but you will have to be responsible in remembering your time changes that you have agreed upon between eachother.

The prices listed are for the school year, one student sharing an hour lesson, each getting a half an hour at the piano or violin alone and a half hour at the computer, (and/or with a few minutes with the theory book or midi/digital piano if necessary for performances, or with CD recordings of what they are performing or of what they might wish to perform).

My summer policy 2010 begins in the first week in June and ends in August. It has more flexibility in it for make-up lessons. There are "vacation holes" in the schedule to make room for the make-up lessons. The lessons are a half-hour long at the piano just like all year round (unless more time is purchased). But there is no computer fees or use. Everyone's vacation schedule is very different, unlike the regular attendance during the schoolyear. It is hard to match two half hour lessons up consistantly in the summer due to so much vacationing. So in the summer, lessons are only a half an hour--same price, with no computer fee. Summer lessons help the student from losing ground from a long summer break. They will advance farther faster if they continue lessons in the summer. They will not have to waste a month of relearning, but instead they can move forward with no backwards movement. This is the more efficient way. But the other way can work also, just not as smoothly.

Monthly payments are due and calculated the first week of each month. If you plan on a vacation, you can tell me on or before their first lesson in the month (if they are going to be there), which lessons you will be gone for that month and I will deduct $21 from that month’s bill. If you have paid for a month, and decide later to take a vacation, then we can easily do a make up lesson (if it is not too close to the first day of school), because students can come any time in the day, unlike the during the schoolyear. All lessons paid for in the summer session must be used for summer session lessons, and are not applied to the school year lessons.
